Quinta do Infantado

Quinta do Infantado, founded in 1816, has belonged to the Roseira family since 1904. It is located in the northern bank of the Douro, in Chanceleiros, 4 km (2.5 miles) from Pinhão. The Quinta has 46 acres of vineyards and is 100% A rated. This is comparable to a Grand Cru, the French renowned wine classification.

All port wines are produced with exclusively local grapes. Among the more than 15 varieties of red grapes are the Touriga Nacional, the Touriga Franca and the Tinta Roriz the most important. The grape varieties Viosinho, Rabigato, Gouveio and Moscatel Galego are used for the white port.

The vineyards (terrace, very steep, with densely packed soil) are worked using traditional methods. All the work is done by hand. The hand-picked grapes ferment long and slowly in vats (2-meter-high stone tanks) and are still pressed by foot. The estate is known for its port that is “meio-seco” or semi-dry in style. Port wines are drier than normal due to a longer fermentation and therefore have more natural alcohol and less sugar than other brands of port. This means that less “aguardente” or brandy is added. Quinta do Infantado in three words: balance, terroir and elegance.
